Harlan County Lake, located in south-central Nebraska near the Kansas border, is a man-made reservoir created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The primary purpose for its construction was flood control along with irrigation and water supply benefits.

Spanning approximately 13,250 acres when at full pool level, Harlan County Lake holds the title as Nebraska's second-largest lake. It officially opened to public use on April 1st, 1952 following completion of Harlan County Dam across Republican River during that same year.

The lake has become a popular recreational destination offering various activities such as boating, fishing (with species like walleye and channel catfish), swimming beaches and camping facilities dotting its shoreline. Its surrounding natural habitat also provides opportunities for wildlife viewing including migratory birds making it an attractive spot not just for anglers but nature enthusiasts too.

History of the Area
Harlan County Reservoir, located in south-central Nebraska near the Kansas border, has a history rooted in both utility and recreation. Prior to its current status as a recreational area managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this land was primarily used for agricultural purposes.

The reservoir's construction began in 1946 following authorization under the Flood Control Act of 1938; it aimed at providing flood control along with other benefits such as irrigation support and hydroelectric power generation. The project required purchasing over 30,000 acres from local landowners before completion in 1952.

Historically significant features within what is now known as Harlan County Dam Site Recreation Area include Native American artifacts indicating past indigenous presence on these lands long before European settlement occurred. Additionally, remnants from early homesteaders can be found throughout the region surrounding this body of water.

In recent years leading up to becoming an established parkland area open to public use year-round since around mid-20th century developments have focused largely upon enhancing visitor experiences through improved facilities like campgrounds or boat ramps.
