SPITLER WOODS STATE PARK
Spitler Woods State Park is a serene natural area located in Macon County, near the town of Mt. Zion, Illinois. Spanning approximately 202 acres, this state park offers visitors an escape into nature with its lush forests and diverse wildlife habitats.
Opened to the public as a state park in 1939 after being donated by Mrs. Rachel Spitler, it features well-maintained hiking trails that meander through mature oak-hickory woodlands typical of central Illinois. The main trail loop extends for about two miles providing opportunities for bird watching and quiet contemplation amidst towering trees.
The park also includes picnic areas equipped with tables and grills where families can enjoy outdoor meals surrounded by greenery. While there are no camping facilities on-site at Spitler Woods State Park, its tranquil environment makes it ideal for day trips focused on relaxation or educational outings emphasizing conservation and ecology.
