HORSESHOE LAKE STATE PARK
Horseshoe Lake State Park, located near Granite City in Madison County, Illinois, spans approximately 2,960 acres. The park's main feature is the large Horseshoe Lake from which it derives its name-a shallow oxbow lake formed by the meandering Mississippi River.
Opened to the public as a state park in 1966, this recreational area offers diverse activities such as fishing for catfish and crappie or hunting waterfowl during regulated seasons. Its sizeable wetland environment supports abundant wildlife viewing opportunities amidst bottomland woods and marshy areas.
The park also provides amenities including picnic facilities with shelters available for reservation; playgrounds; hiking trails that allow visitors to explore various habitats within the site; and boat ramps granting access to aquatic adventures on Horseshoe Lake itself.
